Yunnan regional guide

Yunnan

Enter through Kunming's lakes and stone forest, slow down around Dali's Erhai and Bai villages, then continue through Shaxi to Lijiang and Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. Understand each city's role before choosing how the eight days should flow.

Three cities, three roles

Start with the part you most want to understand

If Yunnan is new to you, compare the three city roles first. If the trip is decided, open the eight-day route. If you prefer one slower stay, continue into the city guides.

Green Lake in Kunming in the morning
Gateway and first adjustment
Kunming
Best with 2 nights

Use Green Lake, Dianchi and the Western Hills, and Naigu Stone Forest as the first Yunnan chapter while adjusting to the plateau pace.

Erhai Lake and Cangshan in Dali
Slow the route down
Dali
Best with 2-3 nights

Cangshan, Erhai, Xizhou, and Bai villages deserve a slower stay rather than a single transfer night before Lijiang.

Lijiang Old Town and Jade Dragon Snow Mountain
Old Town and high-altitude finish
Lijiang
Best with 2-3 nights

Separate Old Town mornings, Baisha village time, and Jade Dragon Snow Mountain instead of staying only on the busiest commercial streets.

See the route first

Kunming, Dali, Shaxi, and Lijiang need different pacing

Kunming handles arrival and adjustment, Dali slows the route, Shaxi adds a real Tea Horse Road pause, and Lijiang brings Old Town and altitude. The map explains route logic only and does not replace live transport or opening information.

This generated map explains regional route logic and is not an official cartographic or live transport map.

Before you decide

Four practical limits to check before this Yunnan route

Altitude
Lijiang and the mountain day require physical awareness

Do not use oxygen as a reason to push through symptoms; descend, rest, and follow local medical advice when discomfort is significant.

Transport
Use rail to Dali, then road through northwest Yunnan

Protect station security and luggage time for rail, then leave margin for mountain roads and changing local conditions toward Shaxi and Lijiang.

Season
Rainy-season weather cannot promise a fixed mountain view

Rain, cloud, and cableway operations can reshape the mountain day. Keep sequencing flexible and never promise one view as guaranteed.

Pace
Eight days is a regional introduction, not a deep stay in every city

Travellers prioritising a slower Dali stay or Lijiang villages should remove an extension rather than add another city.
